Thank you for this awesome tutorial! I have used it with a group of high school students to teach them how to sew and then sell them to rat lovers in our school as a fundraiser for the end of the school-year class trip. For those who asked about what rings to use, I bought the thin metal shower curtain rings that are pear-shaped and open and close via a pinch clip. You can add more, if needed, to attach to a farther distance and they are more versatile for attaching to a variety of cage bars and sizes. They will not break as easily as plastic and hold up better if chewed on. Finally, they are less expensive and easier to find than the plastic rings used in the tutorial.

I’m so sorry for your loss. It’s hard not to feel guilty when we know afterwards that we didn’t see the signs. I actually had a dumbo rat named Daffodil who had been put down and I discovered after the fact that it was her teeth (not the mammary tumor she had) that had caused her issues. I felt so guilty and like I was a bad pet parent. We can only do so much and being brave and telling your story here will definitely help others to remember to keep an eye out for teeth issues, behavioral changes, weight loss, etc. Remember that you gave him the best life possible for what you knew at the time and that is all you can do.

This is a wonderful video! Question: When you clean the large cage, don’t the hammocks and snuggle spots retain an odor from the older rats? Do you launder those before reintroducing the babies + adults?

Bloody hell your older boys are huge. Thanks for the video. I hope my introduction goes as good as yours. I have 4 x 1 year old males and yesterday I got 3 baby boys to add to the group. I’m a bit scared because I know which of my boys is Alpha and although he isn’t aggressive he is always wrestling and pinning down my other boys. Only once it got seriously where I had to shove a pillow between two of them. So yeah I’m a little frightened because the babies are so damn tiny.

i’m getting baby rats sometime within the next week or so! I already picked them out, I’m just waiting until they’re old enough. I’m so excited, thanks for sharing your first week with these precious babies!
